Room Policy

The An Gorta Mor collection is located within the Arnold Bernhard Library on the Mt. Carmel campus. It offers a unique selection of books, original paintings, and bronze sculptures portraying impressions of An Gorta Mor - The Great Hunger.

The Quinnipiac University community and qualified researchers are welcome and encouraged to use the collection that includes approximately 600 volumes on the Irish famine and on events surrounding this tragedy. The collection is non-circulating; the books may be used only in the collection room itself. A list of holdings is available on the Arnold Bernhard Library web site.

Those interested in the collection for research purposes should call 203-582-3469 prior to arrival to discuss their research and to make an appointment. Supporting documents, such as a letter of introduction may in some cases be requested from the prospective researcher.

All research is to be conducted Monday-Friday, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., and is by appointment only. Researchers will be asked to check book bags, handbags, briefcases, etc. at the Circulation Desk. Researchers can take notes in pencil only or on a laptop computer. Pens are not allowed. Two books are allowed for use at one time.

Visitors are always welcome, and a computer is available in the room to allow access to the An Gorta Mor web site of documents digitized from Irish collections.
